Night-time hike on Mount Guardiabella: the route from Colle San Bartolomeo

A summer night-time hike in the Ligurian hinterland offers the chance to discover the mountainous landscape in a different light, far from the heat of the coastal beaches. Mount Guardiabella, a peak situated in the Imperia hinterland, offers a close-up view of the geographical features of Western Liguria. The route follows a panoramic ridge that combines watching the sunset with gazing at the starry sky, and reaches its most evocative moment on the night of San Lorenzo (10 August).

The geography of Mount Guardiabella: the watershed between the Alps and the Mediterranean

Mount Guardiabella represents a geographical transition point of great interest in western Liguria. Situated on the watershed that divides the slopes draining into the Ligurian Sea from the inland valleys leading to the Alpine region, this mountain offers a unique vantage point over the environmental diversity of western Liguria. Walking along this ridge means constantly moving along the invisible boundary between the Mediterranean climate, which rises from the coastal valleys, and the typically mountainous or Alpine climate that characterises the north-facing slopes.

During the day, the vegetation clearly reflects this dual character: the summit grasslands and high-altitude pastures, historically used for summer grazing, give way to dense woodland along the mountain flanks. As the sun sets, the temperature drop becomes noticeable and the cool air descending from the Alpine peaks meets the last warm currents rising from the sea. This climatic phenomenon makes an evening walk particularly enjoyable during the summer months, offering natural relief from the temperatures experienced on the coast.

Technical details and route

To tackle this hike safely, it is essential to be familiar with the technical details of the route, which covers a considerable distance but features gradients that are manageable for hikers of average fitness.

  • Starting point: Colle San Bartolomeo, in the municipality of Cesio (IM).
  • Total distance: 10 kilometres.
  • Elevation gain/loss: +/- 500 metres.
  • Estimated duration: approximately 5 hours, including stops along the way.
  • Difficulty rating: E (Hiking). This classification indicates that the route follows clear paths and tracks, with no significant technical difficulties. It is a route suitable for anyone in normal physical condition and equipped with suitable footwear and gear for mountain walking.

The experience at sunset

The route begins at dusk from Colle San Bartolomeo, a mountain pass linking the Impero Valley with the Arroscia Valley. The decision to set off in the late afternoon is designed to make the most of the changing light that characterises summer twilight.

The first part of the walk involves ascending the ridge. The warm light of the late afternoon accompanies you along the crest, illuminating the silhouettes of the Ligurian Alps on one side and the expanse of the Ligurian Sea on the other. This stretch of the watershed acts as a natural terrace: the view stretches out unobstructed thanks to the absence of tall trees on the crest, which is dominated by wide open grasslands.

Once you reach the main vantage point, the best time is to stop and watch the sunset. As darkness falls, your attention shifts to the night sky. On the night of San Lorenzo, the minimal light pollution from the ridge areas makes it ideal for observing shooting stars and the Moon. The return journey takes place entirely at night, crossing pastures and wooded areas: an experience that allows you to take in the sounds and scents of the local flora and fauna, which come to life after sunset.

Practical advice and equipment

As for equipment, it is essential to wear suitable footwear: hiking boots or trail shoes with lugged soles, capable of providing good grip on unpaved terrain and the grassy slopes of the ridge. Clothing should be technical and worn in layers to cope with the rapid drop in temperature that occurs at altitude immediately after sunset.

Davide’s tip: When undertaking this night-time hike on Monte Guardiabella, remember that there are no springs or drinking water supply points on the ridge: bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. As the return walk takes place entirely in the dark through pastures and woods, it is essential to pack a head torch or a hand-held torch with fully charged batteries in your rucksack, as well as a windproof shell or a light jacket to protect yourself from the damp chill that rises from the valleys after sunset.
