Hiking on Monte Monega: a 360-degree view of the Ligurian Alps

If you’re planning a holiday in Western Liguria and looking for an experience that takes you beyond the beaches, towards the highest peaks of the inland region, Monte Monega is a destination that combines high-altitude hiking with the discovery of ancient traditions. This peak, rising to almost 1,900 metres, offers a privileged vantage point over the surrounding valleys, far from the beaten track. Monte Monega is located in the Ligurian Alps, an area where alpine nature meets the proximity of the sea, creating unique landscapes and microclimates. Climbing to its summit means immersing yourself in a high-mountain environment, characterised by beech woods and wide pastures, which in summer transform into a mosaic of deep green. It is an opportunity for those seeking a deeper connection with the Ligurian mountain environment, following the paths once trodden by shepherds.

The route from Case Fascei: technical details

The hike to Monte Monega described here starts from Case Fascei, a hamlet in the municipality of Montegrosso Pian Latte, in the Upper Arroscia Valley. This route will take you through a beech forest, before opening out onto the high-altitude pastures that characterise the mountain’s slopes, until you reach the 1,882-metre summit. Here are the technical details of the route:
  • Starting point of the hike: Case Fascei (Montegrosso Pian Latte, IM)
  • Total distance: 12 km
  • Elevation gain: +600 metres
  • Estimated duration: 5 hours
  • Difficulty: E (Hiking). This means that the route is suitable for anyone in normal physical condition and with appropriate equipment. It follows well-marked paths or mule tracks, but may include uphill and downhill sections, with elevation changes requiring a minimum level of fitness.

Traditions and views

The hike to Monte Monega is not just physical exercise, but also a journey to discover the pastoral traditions that still animate these mountains today. The ‘malghe’ (mountain huts), structures used for cheese production and as shelter for livestock, bear witness to an economy and a way of life that have shaped the landscape and local culture. Once you reach the summit of Monte Monega, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree view encompassing the Argentina Valley and the Arroscia Valley. On a clear day, the view stretches from the Maritime Alps to the blue of the Ligurian Sea in the distance, offering a contrast typical of this part of Liguria.

Preparation and equipment

To make the most of this summer mountain hike, it is essential to set off well prepared. The mountains, even in the height of summer, demand respect and the right precautions. Recommended equipment includes:
  • Hiking shoes or boots, preferably with a well-gripped sole to tackle the mountain trails.
  • Breathable technical clothing, suitable for coping with temperature variations between the start and the summit, and between sun-exposed areas and shaded sections.
  • A windbreaker, useful even in summer to protect against gusts of wind or drops in temperature at the summit.
  • A hat or bandana to protect against the sun, especially in open sections.
  • A good supply of water, at least 1.5 litres per person, is essential, as there may be no water points along the route.
  • A packed lunch to enjoy at the summit or along the route.
Davide’s tip: In the mountains in summer, even if you set off early in the morning, the sun’s heat is felt quickly at altitude and the temperature can change. Make sure you have at least 1.5 litres of water per person and a hat or bandana for protection, especially when you leave the beech forest to reach the open pastures and the summit of Monega. A windbreaker in your rucksack is always a good idea for exposed peaks.
